Community Based Punishments

Introduction

Wherever there is crime, the court and the state are faced with two options. They can either punish the criminals or can send them to rehabilitation centres. Both of them are important fro the criminals and can help them teach a lesson for the crime that they have committed. The difficult choice is whether the court should punish the person or send them to a rehabilitation centre. The community based punishments are preferred nowadays because they teach the criminals how to live and how they should act in order to make sure that they improve themselves and be a better person.

Discussion

If a person has committed a crime, he should first be tried in court and then after hearing the case, the court should decide as to whether the person should be punished or should be sent to the rehabilitation centre. If it is found out that the crime is minor and has not damaged anyone severely, the person is recommended to be sent to rehabilitation centres. This practice is encouraged by the courts so that the people are not impacted in a negative manner (Naden, 2002, pp. 26). It is preferred that the people are sent to rehabilitation centres as it brings out the best of them and develops them in a positive manner. In this manner, they can make sure that the criminals can improve themselves and can become a better human being. This is the reason that rehabilitation is preferred by the law and state.

This means that the criminals are not being punished for what they are doing. This is the reason that it is recommended that rehabilitation should be the way out for criminals. In different countries, there are a lot of different illegal activities for which the criminals are arrested and are imprisoned. This does not mean that every criminal has committed the same level of crime; therefore, should not be given the same punishment. If the crime is minor, he should be sent to the rehabilitation centre so that he comes out as an improved person.

Another advantage of rehabilitation on recidivism is that, the criminals are not outraged by the fact that they are being convicted wrongfully. Imprisonment rarely brings an improvement in the personality of the person, which is why; it is highly recommended that the court should not always punish the criminals. Recidivism provides a lot of opportunities to the people to develop themselves and learn from life. There are different educational programs that are a part of it which helps in making the criminal aware of the fact that he has committed an illegal act. This will help in the development of the criminals and will help them get rid of the criminal activities, hence will reduce the recidivism.
