Introduction

Leaders exhibit excellence when they demonstrate that leadership is action, not position. Action, results in a product, both tangible and intangible. Great leaders are flexible and willing to change if additional information warrants it. They are competent and know how to communicate. They model appropriate action and take the initiative to fight complacency. They consider excellence to be everybody's desire. They lead by example, employing their team in accordance with its capabilities yet challenging individuals or team to seek and take responsibility for their actions.

 

Part I:

Many people believe that leadership and management are completely different concepts and several practitioners and scholars have put in a great deal of effort and time to differentiate between the two. If we focus on how both of these are helpful and important and how they complement each other in many circumstances, it would be easier to describe them completely. The palpably common thing between leadership and management is that both of them involve striving to accomplish goals with a group of people. Factors like time, goals, functions and nature of relationship between manager and subordinate are different across the concepts of management and leadership.

Even though both of these concepts may seem to be different but in reality they go strictly hand in hand. Long term planning's for an organization cannot occur without the presence of a good leader because a good leader is a good manager of short term tasks at hand which lead to the completion of the long term plans. Without a manager, it is impossible to lead and control the group of people into inspiration and motivation which would consequently aid in the efficient management of the task at hand.

Leadership goes beyond one's actions and doings. An effective leadership can be viewed in the window of someone who knows being doing what they believe in. Knowing involves the knowledge a person has which cover the moral values, beliefs, attitudes, etiquettes and the level of awareness a person possesses. Doing of the actions reflect the behaviour and skills. An effective leadership comprises of all three constituents and all of these are tightly interlinked. For instance, your knowledge affects your thinking and your behaviour and actions can lead to a new set of awareness and knowledge. The development of a person as a leader means developing as a human being, as a person who is becoming more knowledgeable about himself, about others, about different leadership concepts.

A person who identifies himself and solidifies his personality by strengthening his values, beliefs and the commitments he makes. A person who improves through the development of his skills and potentials. To know one can be compared to the peeling of layers of onions.
