Case Study- Project Management

Introduction

The case is related to the project management of a biscuit company that is BIX-FIX plc. The company has been at a disadvantage compared to its competitors due to its outdated marketing/ sales processes and production line, which resulted in increasing cost and declining sales. BIX-FIX has decided to launch a new product; a triangle shaped individually wrapped white Belgium chocolate covered biscuit, for the luxury biscuit sector. This new product will be the driving force behind revitalizing the company's sales and marketing approach. For the new product, the company has decided to no longer directly sell to small retailers but instead to tap into this market via wholesalers. In addition to this, in the view of marketing department, selling the products to wholesalers, rather than directly to small retailers, will increase BIX-FIX profit margins from 12.5 % to 15 %. The company will have to generate new marketing processes and sales to target the wholesale market.

Discussion

BIX-FIX should adopt the lean production as it is an important concept in the operations management which involves the methodology of assembly line which is important for the manufacturing of food items, this manufacturing is also known as the just in time production. Furthermore, the lean manufacturing of the BIX-FIX should involve the just in time inventory but the major difference in the production will be based on the target market as the BIX-FIX focuses on customers of every age.

Many industries, including the food industry, have adopted the principles of lean production. The rules of lean production can be summarized in the given manner to get the advanced operation management.

Eliminate Waste

For an organization like BIX-FIX, the waste or the raw material that is not important should be eliminate but in modern operation management that is the lean management system it is preferred that the waste should be utilized so that the productivity gets increased (Kampsax International, 1999) .

Minimize Inventory and Maximize Flow

It is important and significant for the BIX-FIX that the production should be base on just in time basis as the nature of production is different from general industries. Frederick W. Taylor introduced some of the principles of scientific management as the mass production industries began to develop. Taylor pioneered dividing work into tasks so that a product could be manufactured and assembled more easily. His work led to substantial improvements in productivity. In addition to this it is also important for the BIX-FIX that the inventory control measure should be adopted like the use of the just in time inventory system which will help the BIX-FIX in minimizing the inventory system and maximize the flow of the production (Kampsax International, 2003) .
