Introduction

'Racism' refers to the discrimination acts that are based just on the racial feature of an entire group of people or of an individual. The racism phenomenon is global and frequently has political connotations that stimulate instability and wars too. Racism has frequently been legislated by governments. Holocaust practices of ethnic cleansing, apartheid, slavery, and different revulsions of particular ethnic groups' mass killing consequences due to the universal approval of the attitude that people could be classified solely on the basis of race and due to the resentments amid people of dissimilar cultures. In the U.S. segregation amid Native Americans, African Americans, European Americans, and different cultural groupings got constituted into laws for the majority of the initial couple of centuries of its subsistence. Whilst a number of social leaders and church condemned it, racism was the rule of law as a replacement for the exclusion until the 1964 Civil Rights Act that officially described it as unlawful discriminatory practice. Racism, at the commencement of the 21st century persisted for accounting for a number of social complications in the U.S. and the overall society. Whilst the different state and federal legislations and Civil Rights Act, which developed made segregation and numerous 'hate' crimes unlawful. Self segregation and racial hatred, after thirty-five years, frequently persisted for keeping races and cultures separated. This paper discusses the emergence of racism in America, the ongoing struggle for the black population from the 14th amendment through the civil rights movement, social conditions of minorities, racism within minority groups, and the benefit whites have keeping minorities in the social class they are in. In addition to this the paper endeavors to answer the question why it is harder for minorities to rise-out of poverty.

Discussion

In the U.S., statistics of crime from different police and government agencies and from the United States Department of Justice show that 65% of prisoners were from the ethnic or racial minorities in the year 1991, up from 60% in the year 1990. It has been estimated by statistics that 28% of black males will go into federal or state prisons throughout their life, matched up to 4.4% of white males and 16% of Hispanic males (Mauer & Huling, Pp. 3-30). Such figures appeared as justifying racism. As per the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, hate crimes that were motivated racially augmented pursuing the 1992 Los Angeles Riots that got ignited due to the wrongdoings by police against a black male, Rodney King, whom viewers across the U.S. watched on videotape and who was stopped in his vehicle the former year, as King was seemed to go through police brutality (Rucker & Upton, Pp. 385). In the year 1993, within a study of 550 American college newspapers' editors, an entire 49% point out that race relations on their specific college grounds were 'poor' or merely 'fair' (Phelps, Pp. 614).
