Research Aims and Objectives

The aim of this research is to analyse how leadership and mentoring is effective in an Academic setting. "In the light of this aim", the study will also fulfil the following objectives:

To identify the role of Leadership and Mentoring

To evaluate the effectiveness of Leadership and Mentoring in Academic setting to evaluate the project plan of Leadership and mentoring in Academic setting

Research Significance

Fulfilling the purpose of this project will help to improve the mentoring power and leadership effectiveness in Academic setting. This project will enhance the acknowledgment about the planning and strategies for increasing students' skills.

What is the current structure of the mentoring program?

What will be support mechanisms in place to guide mentors in engaging students?

What level of training does Institutes undergo prior to interacting with mentees?

What is institutional change planning useful for improving mentor and leader's effectiveness?

What extent will the current afterschool program structure promote mentor/mentee interaction and leadership activities?

Literature Review

Leadership is a concept used in many different contexts with an array of meanings. Accordingly, there is a lack of common understanding as to what leadership is and what constitutes principled leadership. Leadership is a crucial concept for professionals working as well as in Academic setting. Only a leader can appeal students in a certain way or direction. "In every context", a leader has a vital influence on his follower. Mentors are advisers. An effective leader can be an effective mentor, vice versa. (McKelvey & Holmen, 2009)

Mentor is a personal, portable, no cost resource to help an individual set and meet his unique goals. In academic setting, a mentor gives support to children and provides academic enrichment. Mentoring is an explicit one-to-one learning relationship. It is between a person who wants to improve job or career skills and a person who can help him or her do that. Mentors are much more than "go-to" people. Mentors are champions of learning and immensely helpful in grooming the personality of an individual. "As educational consultants", one of the pressing needs that we find administrators often recognize is the need for mentoring new and veteran teachers. (Klasen & Clutter buck, 2004)

Effective mentoring is based on identified mentoring needs and skill gaps. Promoting R&D and national competitiveness in an academic setting are a role of higher education institutes. They face quality, innovation, influence and profitability pressures, and are expected to create strategies and new kinds of leadership to meet these demands.

Anglo-Saxon universities particularly in the United State, United Kingdom and Australia have long been subject to and responded to market-based competition in higher education. The aim of these universities to develop the potential students for entailing the market based competition.

Continental and Nordic universities and higher education institutes are now facing similar pressures that are leading to a structural transformation of the university sector (Fukami, 2008).
