Abstract

Human rights protect ability of individuals to meet their basic needs. People with disability around the world are exposed to a wide range of human rights violations in the domain of healthcare, employment, housing and education. Basic human rights are also denied by such as the right to vote, to marry and have children. There are many organizations working for the cause of disabled persons; providing treatment, protection against human rights abuses, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities (including people with mental illness). This paper is aimed at to discuss human rights groups working to end Human Rights abuse of disabled people. The strategies and tactics used or recommended by those human rights group are also be discussed along with an analysis of progress made by these groups. It is suggested that it is high time to protect the rights of people with disabilities, as many times, these people are unable to exercise effectively their human rights. Such organizations can particularly help this vulnerable population in meeting their needs by promoting awareness of the human rights of people with disabilities among family members and in the society.

Introduction

Disabled people, in the world, are among the most underprivileged persons and are over-represented among the most miserable of the poor. In recent years, there has been visible alteration in the consideration given to disability. The language of the mainstream concern has also altered with the growth of the disability movement in strength. New legislation has been passed by many governments, in addition to mentioning the need to take in disabled people in their worldwide development work. Some form of guidelines or policy also has been possessed by many international development organizations concerning the requisite to take in disabled persons in their work. Along with those organizations exclusively committed to working with persons with disability globally, the mainstream now turns to the disability's social model and to rights of people with disability as fundamental to their work. Nevertheless, the level to which alterations in documentation and legislation manifest variation in practice is more arguable. It is complained by many people in the disability movement that still to any great degree; the disabled people's voices are not being heard.

Until the Showtime of the 21st century, any mention of disabled people's rights was made by only some NGOs working in international development. Before then, what reference there was usually in the perspective of charity and medical aid. Some acknowledgment of the disabled people's needs have been recently shown by rising numbers of agencies (e.g. Action Aid, VSO, Oxfam, and World Vision).
