Art Analysis

Introduction

Today in 21st century, with the advanced technology like cell phones, internet and media we are able to access to thousands of photographic pictures. We live in the place that is filled by aesthetic beauty. When the picture or image gains our attention and intrigues our eyes, it provides ideologies and cultural values that cannot be seen by anyone directly (Patin & McLarren, 1997).

For this task, I visited Sofia Quintero Art & Cultural Center to see the exhibition of art gallery. In found a large number of fine art work of various artists. However, for this paper I have chosen the picture named Atomic Bomb dome. In following section, the paper will discuss the detailed analysis of the picture with respect to Robin William's C.R.A.P. denotative meaning and connotative meaning.

Discussion

Denotation and Connotation

Denotation is the literal references or meaning f the signs while connotation is the meanings that are implied or suggested by the signs. For example, in denotation, Mickey Mouse represents a cartoon character of a mouse, but in connotation, Mickey Mouse can be a representative of Disney Land the happiest place on this earth or Childhood. Therefore, a photographic image without any signs has some denotations. However, it has been stated that the denotation of image or picture itself contains every chance of being mythological. The term “mythological” pertains to the traits of a photograph, which conveys and represents the norms of a culture and ideology. As an outcome, there is a photographic absurdity because of which leads the denotative and connotative messages of an image co-exist (Coon & Mitterer, 2008).

The cultural and historical elements of a picture are as important as the picture itself. Connotation has several modes that are employed for the identification of messages and ideologies of culture in the picture. Connotation's first mode is perceptive in which we categorize our perception. Cognitive mode is the second one, which makes us recognize the things that are familiar to use relying on our knowledge. Moreover, connotation has ideological or ethical mode that make people recognize the depicted values like ideals of beauty and fashion (Bovée, 2003).

As a result, connotation depends on the cultural and historical awareness of the viewer thus misunderstanding is raised as an outcome of various meanings depending on one's knowledge. However, it can be analyzed that the pure denotation is probable in traumatic circumstances only. The pure denotation is probable in events like catastrophes, death and fires, however this can be disagreed with the statement and belief that photographic picture is connotative since there is a reason behind the capture and presentation of a specific target of the picture (Monaco, 2000).
