The 1978 Camp David Negotiations between Israel and Egypt

Introduction

The signature of the Camp David Accords that occurred in 1978 between Israel and Egypt was considered a major achievement for US diplomatic officials that initiated the idea of peace. The covert discussions between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and, Israel's Prime Minister Menachem Begin created the first ever peace treaty of Israel, with an Arab country in that year. The peace agreement received an enormous support from the former military officers who participated in the wars between both these countries. However, the peace between both countries only had a certain level, and, it never increased from that point. From the Egyptian perspective, the popular support from the people plunged with Israel's military actions in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories. After the killing of Mr. Sadat in 1981, probably because of his soft policy towards Israel, his successor President Hosni Mubarak took over the responsibility to protect the peace treaty. These efforts made Egypt an important strategic partner of the West and it assisted in acquiring $1.3bn (£818m) a year in US military aid. When Mr. Mubarak stepped down as President of Egypt because of the immense pressure from the public, Israeli Government was worried about the future of their relationships with Israel. However, Egypt's military establishment speedily gave assurances to the Israeli Government that 1979 peace treaty would not be violated. Egyptian officials said that they will play a decisive role in the peace negotiations between Israel, and, the Palestinians. The details of the events that occurred during the Camp David Agreement in 1978 will be discussed in detail, in the following paragraphs.
