Abstract

There is much need to protect the shoreline within the country in order to protect the infrastructure and surrounding locations since coasts are causing erosion which destroys land. For the purpose many green infrastructures are being implemented.

Introduction

Green Infrastructure is basically defined as connected networks of spaces and naturally existing areas like for instance wetlands, forest preserves, plant vegetation that naturally manages stomwater, reduces chances of flooding and improves the quality of water. Green infrastructures are easier to manage and are considerably cheaper to maintain. The green infrastructure approach analyses the natural environment in a way that specifies the functions and finds ways to put it into place. The term Green infrastructure is often referred to as multifunctional Green infrastructure Green infrastructures are of various kinds specifically wetlands, Swales, rain garden and green roofs.

Increased need to improve climate and shoreline

Green infrastructures are being implemented due to the climatic changes caused mostly by global warming there is a threat that these changes might also effect the water resources, for this purpose much emphasis is being paid on shoreline protection to preserve the habitat and surrounding locations. Countries are dealing with this change through implementing green infrastructures, Wetlands in Australia will be analysed within this paper.

Impact of coastal erosion in Australia

The coastal Crisis in Australia has alarmed many and Professor Andrew of coast watch has briefed that if not dealt with coastal erosion can become a huge issue specifically for building and houses that can be completely destroyed by it.

Wetlands and the significance of maintaining them

A wetland is basically an area that is saturated with water, seasonally or permanently which gives it distinct features of an ecosystem, an ecosystem is characterised by the vegetation that grows in the, the unique characteristics of the solid which is hydric in nature and supports aquatic plants. The water found in wetlands can be freshwater, saltwater or brackish. Wetlands include swamps, mangroves, Carr, pocosin and varzea (CNT, 2003).

Wetlands help improve the environment

The reason why wetlands are so important is because they act like sponges and prevent floods from occurring. By doing so it helps keep the river level normal and also purifies the water surface. When there is a storm the wetland starts absorbing water, and when the water level is low the wetland slowly releases water which helps dry lands. Wetlands also release vegetative matter into the river which helps feed fish. For any country near the shoreline having wetlands keeps the inhabitants safe by absorbing excess water during heavy rain storms and floods. Hence wetlands help to protect our environment against natural calamities like floods (MBG, 2002).

Problem Statement
