Reducing Disaster Risks

Disaster Risk Reduction also known as DRR is said to be an approach that is systematic by nature which is used to identify, assess as well as facilitate in the reduction of the risks that are said to be linked to a particular disaster regardless of its genre (Kreimer, 2003). It is said to be premised on the reduction of the vulnerabilities in relation to the socio-economic status along with dealing with environmental factors that are said to trigger them. There are only natural hazards and there is no such thing as natural disaster. It is an approach of DRR which is said to reduce or suppress the degree of damage that is said to be caused by the environment as well as other hazards such as cyclones, earthquakes, floods, as well as droughts. Disasters are often said to follow natural hazards (Sinha, 1992).

The disaster results when the hazard occurred and it impacted on the community, overwhelming their capacity for coping up. The disaster affects the people, their livelihoods and also their environment. Thus, the magnitude of the impact is basically directly related to the scale and intensity of the hazard and the vulnerability of the communities and individuals. The degree to which the disaster is severe is also said to depend on the impact that a hazard has had on the environment at a macro level and on the society at a micro level. The scale in terms of the impact is said to depend on the choice that one makes in one's life as well as the environment. It is said to be related to the choice that one makes when it comes to the way the food that one eat is grown, the way one builds a home and how one builds a home along with the kind of government that a country has and the e way the financial system of a country works and the content that is said to be taught in school (www.aimp.apec.org). The premise based on which the decisions are made and the kind of actions that is chose and is associated with the decision and the degree to which these decisions makes our society as well as our environment vulnerable to the natural hazards that hits us (Wisner, et. al., 2004).

Disaster risk reduction is Choice-Oriented

Disaster risk reduction also known as DRR is said to be a practice that is based on a concept premised on the reduction of the disasters as well as risks via the systematic efforts that needs to be analyzed along with the reduction of the causal factors of the kind o disasters that have hit us and the potential of these disasters to hit back again. Having a reduction of the exposure of the hazards, reducing the degree to which the people are vulnerable to such hazards along with wise management as well as the improvement or amendments in relation to the degree of preparedness of adverse events like cyclones, ...
