Introduction

"The Yellow Wallpaper" was published in January, 1892. It was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, an American writer. The story was first published in The New England Magazine. The concerned literature would be considered in parallel with Kate Chopin's “Story of an Hour”. Certain literary elements including: isolation, loneliness and alienation would be compared and contrasted.

This paper is about to show that Gilman has tried to evoke and put forth the message of individual and feminine expressions, in this short story. In comparison, in the 'Story of an Hour', it can be understood that this story is talking about the social situation of women during that era. The analysis of the paper aims to show that while Kate identifies with the social situation of women in the late 19th century; Gilman rather profoundly reflects the feminine condition, of the time, by comparing it to an inanimate handkerchief.
