Introduction

The purpose of this assignment is to analyse the media representation of food and diet. Furthermore, the paper will analyse how media representation might impact on health wellbeing. It is difficult to know how much influence the media on food choices of adolescents, although the final results are very eloquent. The food industry with thousands of brands advertised on TV is the biggest spender on advertising. The role of the media has been a crucial aspect of health communication. Health communication professionals work in concert with media outlets to further their goals. Examples of the collaborative relationship between the media and health communication professionals include developing health promotion campaigns to target specific audiences.

In the United States and United Kingdom, media (television, radio, print advertisements, etc.) are often used to promote health messages and products. Television is common in households and is the primary source of news and entertainment for many families. Daily exposure to media messages regarding health products, food, pharmaceuticals, and health care providers is common and frequently based on sophisticated marketing techniques tailored to specific demographics and cultural groups. In today's modern society, it is almost impossible to avoid media influence on the lives of people, as it has its widespread effects ranging from how people should look to what people should drive, and people today have become addicts to this media driven world.

In recent years, health communication delivery strategies have changed dramatically with the advent of online and social media. The delivery of messages and the use of channels in health communication depend on factors such as age, gender, ethnic background, regional differences, and socioeconomic status. For example, older patients often appreciate communication styles informed by traditional media channels, whereas younger patients may prefer online or emerging forms of social media. Women may be more attuned to expansive discussion of health topics, whereas men may prefer succinct and direct answers. Recognition and appreciation of these differences is an aspect of health communication. As the demographic makeup of countries such as the United States shifts, a broadening of cultural differences and increasing incidence of language barriers presents increasing challenges for health communication.

One of the reasons why health issues are not the same in different societies is that the media, fashion, culture, environment, celebrities etc. They all have an influence on our lifestyle, our thoughts and our food. Indeed, food choices are driven by health concerns, and increasingly, the media inform the public about food attitudes to adopt. We see a lot on television, in magazines and radio advertising campaigns that give consumers a practical advice to take every day (eat-moving campaigns for example).
