River Torrens

Introduction

Australia has several rivers covering its land one of it is River Torrens. This is the river which is situated in the Adelaide City. This river starts from Mount Pleasant in the Adelaide hills flows through Adelaide than into the West Beach (Sea). This River was named after Robert Torrens who was the chairman of Colonization commission which promoted settlement in South Australia. In the initial days it was used as the sewerage in Adelaide (Daniels & Tait 2006). In the initial days it was dirty, stinky and very muddy and the vegetation at the banks of it was quite low. It was in 1880 that Dam was built and formed an ornamental lake. Torrens River provides 60% of the water needs (Daniels 2010). In the present phase the lake is much cleaner and is regularly used for recreational activities.

River Torrent Sustainability

Torrens River in 06-07 provided the Adelaide City around 298 Mega Litre of Water. Several measures have been taken by the government to work for its sustainability. In the initial phase the river Torrens water was dirty and was used for sewerage purposes. The catchment area of the river was quite limited in size. The river did not have cemented walls to avoid the water logging. No proper dams were there to hold the water draining out in the sea. It was river which was feed by several seasonal un-cemented catchments which used to flow only in spring and winter seasons. This river also had the problem that it used to over flow and cause massive flooding in the city. This resulted in millions of dollar to the city infrastructure (Daniels & Tait 2006). Now the government has taken improve the River Torrens sustainability. The Government has made several efforts to increase the catchment areas of the River by introducing Torrens Catchment Water Management Board. This board work for increasing the water quality as well as the quantity. Several Dams have been built to increase the catchment. The government has also taken measures to increase the quality so that it can better support marine lives and also provide quality water to the city. Creeks feeding into the river have been installed with trash rack. Thus it stops the waste from entering the River. To stop flooding and erosions park have been built around the river side for e.g. linear park which runs along the river. Several other dams have also been built to counter the flooding related issue. Dams have also been built in rural areas where the villagers are taught ways to keep the river and the dam water clean (Daniels 2010) .Thus this is a river which is sustainable for the future Australian needs.
