The Origin of Life on Earth

Introduction

Tyson writes towards the end of the chapter of his famous book “the origin of life” that the crux of the research conducted by his team has unsettled the beliefs of those in pursuit of certainty in scientific research. Tyson has stressed with a number of examples that there are a number of important questions that can have more than one plausible answer. All of these explanations fail to provide a complete answer to the questions and cannot be taken as a correct explanation to the question. This brings in focus the concepts of certainty and uncertainty.

Certainty can be considered as the highest form of knowledge that a person can have about a concept. Certainty is categorized into subjective and objective certainty. Subjective certainty (I feel certain) means that the person has complete confidence based on the knowledge that they posses. However, objective certainty (It is certain that) has more than subjective knowledge and incorporates empirical propositions as well to support the claim (Stanley 2008, 33-34).

Unsettling Example

Ethics is the branch of philosophy that provides the principles for making the decision between the nature of an action being right or wrong. However, there are a number of different and conflicting points of views maintained by various philosophers on this view. Most of these philosophers including Aristotle and Plato provide quite convincing, yet conflicting principles for deciding the nature of an action. Later deontological ethics was developed and challenged by the consequentiality ethics. This shows that there can be a number of plausible explanations to an issue, which leaves the issue open for further exploration because it is unsettling to a large extent.
