The Plan and Design of an IT System for a Small Urgent Care Facility

Introduction

With time have changed and evolved many practices in many fields. One of these includes the field of medicine particularly the field of health care. Introduction of various new and updated technological equipments and practice of several new therapeutic treatments have resulted in many changes in the practices of Nursing and Patient Care Delivery. Therefore, in order to continue effective and efficient treatments of the patients, it is essential that the nursing staff in any hospital, clinic or medical facility adapt themselves with the changes (Ranawat and Ryan, 2013).

Health information technology (Health IT) has the ability to provide improved care for patients, and to help clinicians in achieving continuous enhancements in the quality of care in primary care settings. This revolution is not possible only by implementing existing health IT tools. In order to generate ongoing and substantial improvements in care, it is necessarily required for the health IT adoption to go hand in hand with the implementation of a robust care model and the routine use of solid improvement methods by all healthcare practitioners (Power and Faden, 2006).

Every country around the globe allocates a major chunk of their funds in the development and betterment of the health and medical sector. This is done to ensure quality and sufficient medical facilities and aid is provided to all the citizens without any bias. Hence, every government plans, run and maintains several official programs in order to provide various medical facilities to every individual citizen (Power, 2006). Because of the need and importance of medical programs, various officials of United States of America has also introduced a federal health plan known as Medicare. Medicare was aimed to provide health benefits and relaxation on the expenditures of medical services to the disabled and senior citizens. Hence, Medicare was a support to many of the under privileged sick individuals. However, future of this is not guaranteed (Roy, 2012).

Goal

In this paper, I plan to document an IT solution for transforming a small urgent care facility into a compliant facility meeting the minimum mandatory requirements for EMRs. The solution will follow the basic Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) steps listed in the below outline to include privacy, security, shared resources, data format, storage, and common file format for EMRs.

Problem Statement

Why are Electronic Medical Patient Records so important in health care treatment?

Discussion

The Basic Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Steps

Step 1: Preliminary Investigation

This step will require a comprehensive analysis of current IT infrastructure, baseline and performance levels in a health care system. It will review and document business procedures and processes and helps in identifying organizational dependencies and data flow. It perform a survey of each and every department and identifies their current information process flow, shortfalls and their methods of performing data storage , data access, data retrieval and the preferred format for EMR. It will further present findings and information ...
