Successful cultural assessment integrates the nurse's knowledge of their own culture and an awareness of the culture of the client. A variety of principles to take into consideration are: awareness of the environment, awareness of community social organizations, knowledge of the specific areas to focus on, knowledge of the appropriate questions to ask without offending, and an awareness that information is both subjective and objective and needs to be verified before taken action (Kumpter, Alvarado, Smith &, Bellamy, 2002).
