A Research Proposal on Communication Problems in the Field Of Design

Introduction

In the field of design, communication is very important. In this field people communicate through various forms including, drawings, wording and pictures to name just but a few and thus ineffective communication are likely to occur and become a big issue. When designs are done especially in engineering and manuals are given for assembling such projects, communication becomes very critical since you must communicate well to achieve the desired results. (Pierce, J. R. 2002) In the case of corporate entities where we require marketing the design to prospective customers and sometimes to the boss are of essence; you can have a good design and failure to sell the design effectively may lead to its failure Anyaebgunam et al 2000Thus communication can be said to be a big problem in the field of design and need thus exists to research about the same. The problematic can be summarized by the following questions;

-How does communication influence design?

-How do you communicate the design you have to the others?

-What is the role of communication in design?

-How does ineffective communication hinder the success of a design?

-What are the objectives of communication in design?

-Are the selected modes and approaches in design the most appropriate for achieving the communication objectives?

-How do you make your communication appealing?

-What are the communication problems in design?

Significance of the Research Problem

Communication related problems in design are those that deal with issues regarding people's participation, perceptions, adoption of innovation and change of behavior. These kinds of problems are generally concerned with change in awareness, knowledge, attitudes and practices. They wanted me to cover some basic layout guidelines making everyday print materials look better. The participants were not interested in being designers (Arens et al 2000). They did, however, find themselves producing many learning materials for in-class use and wanted to know some basic strategies for improving them. I agreed to deliver and set to preparing my presentation. My plan was to introduce some design rules and to discuss what good and bad design is. Seemed easy enough — I'd have this wrapped up in no time. While organizing the course, I quickly began second guessing the content. First off, I was going against my own belief that there really is no right or wrong design technique. How was I going to explain to a class of design newbie's that this is right or wrong and why this is good design and that is bad design?

If the message is not communicated effectively the design is not successful — in other words it is a bad design. Designers often are preoccupied with products when what matters is how their ideas occur in talk, in clear presentations, in hard evidence, and in compelling arguments. It is communication that makes a difference and gets results.
