Abortions Point vs. Counterpoint

Abortion is the choice of women whether or not she want to receive one. Abortion is one of the most controversial moral issues that have become the center of discussion in our contemporary society. This issue has raised strong arguments, and for some people simply to mention 'abortion' is to stir up emotions. In this essay, I will discuss people's attitudes, group attitudes and precedents in law towards abortion. There is 3 different views that abortion can be seen as, firstly some people believe that it's a woman's right to demand an abortion, then there are those who believe it is a murder of an unborn human individual and those that think it is justifiable under certain circumstances. I will give both sides of this argument and explain why I believe abortion should be illegal. There are, however, cases where the rights of the potential mother will be in sufficient conflict with those of the fetus that an abortion could be justified. The reason for this is that it is not justifiable to destroy the life of someone who can't defend itself.

The reason why abortion is such a controversial issue is that every abortion kills a baby. The issue of abortion is serious and could be considered as one of the largest human rights issues in America today with over 80000 unborn children being killed by abortion annually, even when it is illegal in most of Australia. In Russia where it is legal it is used as a form of contraception when women have two or more per year. What is this doing to them physically and emotionally?

The most commonly used techniques are vacuum aspiration, dilation and curettage and dilation and evacuation. The cervix of the womb is dilated with instruments and the child either dismembered and sucked out (vacuum aspiration) or pulled apart with forceps (or a curette) and then scraped out. A surgical abortion that is performed between 6 and 12 weeks into a pregnancy may be done while the woman is awake. She is given the option of being sedated by medications, or having her cervix numbed (local anesthesia) with an injection so that she is basically pain-free. A surgical abortion for a pregnancy over 12 weeks is usually done while the woman is sedated, although it can also be performed while the woman is awake. The cervical canal is enlarged (dilated) and a hollow tube is inserted into the uterus. Most women who undergo surgical abortions done in appropriate medical facilities recover without any physical complications. Any significant emotional and psychological issues should be considered and addressed before and after a chosen abortion.

The decision to have an abortion is an intensely personal one. Nearly all health care providers suggest proficient counseling before making this decision. The hard line conservative position (i.e. the position claiming that abortion is wrong in all cases, except maybe when the mother's life is at stake, or there is an extremely grave consequence to the mother if the pregnancy continued) ...
