Introduction

Monitoring and evaluation are elements which separate effective teaching from non-effective teaching. It is the role of teacher to ensure that students are able to comprehend the lesson material and have achieved the learning outcomes. This paper provides a discussion of strategies for monitoring students' understanding of lesson material. It also describes some strategies which can be used in class room easily and conform to the monitoring concepts: monitoring goals, providing for timely monitoring, decision making and corrective action, and improvement of instruction. This paper is not an exhaustive list of methods and techniques regarding the monitoring of student learning. However, it discusses some of the most important methods in practice.

Discussion

Teaching is basically communication and transfer of knowledge. One of the most important components of communication is the feedback. This feedback in academic setting is known as the monitoring. It measures the effectiveness of teaching. Careful monitoring differentiates effective schools and teachers from not effective ones. Monitoring involves activities and actions pursued by teachers to gauge the student learning from the lessons in order to make instructional decisions and providing feedback to student regarding their progress in studies. Brophy and Good (1986), refers the decision making skill a criteria separating effective from ineffective teachers. Teachers good in decision making adjust their actions according to the needs and performances of the students.

Monitoring Student Understanding

The monitoring methods of teachers are different. The most common method of evaluation or monitoring is asking oral questions in the class. This gives a simultaneous feedback as to the level of understanding that, student comprehends (Cotton, 2008).
