Introduction

Mankind is supposed to learn knowledge, skills and techniques to carry out different types of operations effectively. There are two major types of learners which are active learners and passive learners. The passive learning approach can be define as a learner is using his or her mind or sense just to take in the information from ongoing class room settings, lectures, audiovisual and reading assignments. The active learning approach can be defined as a learner used to participate in lectures and class discussion. These types of students used to invest sufficient amount of energy in all learning phases. In general, learning is comprises of three different phases such as input, operations and feedback. This type of learning is required to equipped student to deal with problems and apply their learning into real life situation.

It is obvious that the learners with an active approach can learn knowledge and skills more efficiently and take less time to learn underlying knowledge as compared to passive learners. Moreover, it is a fact that the active learners are expected to perform better after learning particular set of knowledge or skills as compared to passive learners. There is a big difference in active learning approach and passive learning approach. This paper will identify the characteristics of an active learner. There are certain techniques that help students in adopting an active approach.

Characteristics of an Active Learner

Under the active learning approach, students are supposed to raise questions regarding the knowledge delivered in lectures (Bean, 1996). These learners seem to develop a clear picture of what they are learning. If there is something which is not clear by the instructions of the teacher then the active learners will raise questions to clear the ambiguity (Bean, 1996). The purpose of the active learners is to have a good command on the topic. The active learners used to focus on exploring aspect of topic to get a more clear view (Bean, 1996). They also note the assumptions of that particular theory to understand that how this theory is applicable and under what circumstances the learning can be implied (Bean, 1996). The main requirement for being active learner is to be mentally present (Chinaei, 2007). The active learners keep themselves engage with the ongoing studies and remained mentally present (Chinaei, 2007). The researchers and theorists have proved that this is the quality of active learners that they can develop their own strategies after attending enough learning session (Chinaei, 2007). They used to have better understanding of the subject and then put all of their efforts to design new strategies on their own (Chinaei, 2007). They are capable of understanding the situation, requirement of that particular situation and eventually pick what is required from their learning (Chinaei, 2007).
