Introduction

Adolescent can be described as the time period of transition of both males and females as from childhood to adulthood. This leads to both psychological and physical changes in human. It is the time where an individual may be disoriented and at the same time may discover a lot of new things. During the period of adolescence an individual may wish to have more independence and will look for self-identity. They become more attracted towards external appearance and the importance of peer groups is also tend to increase. The period of adolescence may also raise the issue of getting involved in drugs and alcohol and therefore this is a crucial time period that needs to be tackled sensibly.

Adolescent is frequently portrayed as a negative time period in the media. Movies that target adolescence usually emphasize on reflecting the problems that are associated with it, for instance school-shootings, drugs abuse, incidents related to alcohol and so on. Simultaneously newspapers also contain news that highlights such issues which may include teenage suicides becoming common and increased gang violence. They illustrate adolescent as an age which is stressful and difficult to survive or endured. Thus this created and image of adolescence as being wild, irresponsible and arrogant. However it is not difficult to overcome this problem it requires the right guidance to be provided to them in order to keep them on track (Bjorklund & Blasi, 2011).

Although the adolescent has been portrayed as negative by the media and even some people would believe so, yet it has been witnessed that many of them have been able to achieve success in their schools and have created a positive image of adolescence in the society by remaining attached to their families and communities without being involved in affairs that may lead to different problems. Yet often these positive perspectives of adolescence are overlooked by the society. However professionals can play a significant role in developing the positive perspectives of this time period by emphasizing on the need for counseling and mentoring and also creating awareness about the psychology of adolescence to ensure that they are provided with appropriate guidance (Svensson, 2003).

Discussion

During adolescent there is development in an individual related to social, emotional, physical and cognitive abilities which are important for adults to address effectively to ensure that this does not cause a negative impact over them. Although every individual may not behave in the same way yet there are certain behaviors that are found to be common in people belonging to this age group. They become more conscious about their physical appearance including both male and female that will enable them to fit in with the norms of the group with whom they can identify. Also they are more likely to get attracted to their opposite genders.
