Human Development is one of the units studied under the Social Work Degree, and under this unit is an observation study I am undertaking as an assignment. In four weeks I will observe a child on four different occasions. Observing the child's daily pattern of behaviour, ability to use the language, play, attitude, feelings and others will be important aspect I will dwell on. Significantly, one thing worth mentioning in my observation work or study is the comparison of what I have studied in theory and its manifestation in practice. '

There will be four people involved in the observation study, myself, the child (Axxxby name) and the parents (Mr and Mrs Txxxx). In order not to obstruct the normal behavioural pattern of the child, I will play a non participant role where necessary. I will also do my best to be neutral in whatever activity the child performs. As the study demands I will be taking notes or be writing what I observe, describing and reporting it in a narrative form.

I chose this particular child for my observation study by considering factors like culture and my non- acquaintance with the family. I with an African cultural background, the family, and in that wise Axxx, am white British. My decision to choose a white British child has nothing to do with discrimination but to learn to improve my knowledge in attitude with people with other cultural or ethnic backgrounds. I introduced myself in the first place and my intention of the contact. I explained my intention and made mentioned of the introductory document from the university to support my claim if the family shows interest in my intention. At the end of our conversation Mr Txxxx showed some interest but said the final decision of acceptance will be made after informing the wife and I will be informed over the phone. On the next day I was informed of Mrs Txxxx's acceptance of my observation study provided I produce the introductory letter from the university. A date was fixed for me to visit the family in one evening for a more serious talk.
