ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES

Introduction

This research report will discuss the possibility of human dependence on alternative energy sources to fulfill its need. It will look into both the aspects of the picture that is arguments in favor and arguments against it, that is increasing human dependence on alternate energy sources while reducing its dependence on Oil (Cradd, 2008). Oil has been used since generations for many a great purposes like transportation, running industries and producing electricity etc. Thus it is widely used to meet the needs of commercial and residential purposes. This paper presents an argument both in favor and against the usage of alternative energies. The research would give particular emphasis on the use of alternative energy in the field of transportation, since US major consumption of oil is directly related to Transportation Sector.

Thesis Statement

Alternative energy sources are more efficient and durable to be used as a substitute of oil in different sectors, especially in transportation.

Alternate Energy Sources

Alternate energy sources are derived from renewable sources of energies. They are less likely to cause harm to natural environment and their usage of natural recourses is minimal or zero. They are the only solution in the times of depleting fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil. Alternative energy is used in the production of electricity and generating heat. Electricity and heat in this form of energy is generated from sources such as water, wind, sun and geothermal energy by sources such as earth heat. Biomass and biogas is generated by the using vegetables, waste materials and anaerobic digestion (Knothe, Bagby and Ryan 1997).

This renewable energy can refill them self over a short period of time and they don't diminish like other fossil fuels. The usage of renewable energy results in low to zero emission of green house gases, so they are environmentally very friendly (Knothe, Bagby and Ryan 1997). This energy when used in cars it results in less emission and results in less cost over a long period of time. It opposite which is brown energy uses non renewable and polluting sources of energy, generally they consume excess water, requires drilling into mines for extraction and emit greenhouse emission on a large scale. Only one renewable energy is debatable, that is nuclear energy. It is responsible for no green house emission yet it requires mining for the storage of nuclear waste material in undergrounds dumping sites. There are great concerns over the sky rocketing prices of oil, depleting fossil fuel resources and impact of green house emission in the world. Thus these concerns are resulting in multiple growths in renewable energy sector (Herbinet, Pitz and Westbrook 2010).
