Animal Testing

Introduction

The use on non-human animals such as rodents, rats, pigs and other animals for experimentation known as animal testing or animal research in vivisection and vivo testing. Annually over 100million non-human primates and vertebrate animals used for experiments worldwide. These figures do not include mice, fish, rats, dogs, birds, frogs and other invertebrates. In US alone, the figures of the year 2001 show that more than 80 million mice and rats used in various experiments. After the experiments have been conducted, the animals that used in that particular experiment largely euthanized. The animals used in animal testing mainly sourced from people who breed them for testing purposes or catch them from the wild and auction them (Faigley & Selzer, Pp. 245-254).

The experiments on animals carried out at various universities, institutions, medical schools, farms, pharmaceutical companies and commercial facilities that offer testing of animals for experimentation and research purpose. These testing services comprise of biomedical research, drug testing, xenotransplantation, toxicology tests comprising testing of cosmetics, as well as wholesome researches like behavioral studies, development biology and genetics. A large number of these experiments performed on rats and mice (Selzer & Faigley, Pp. 629-632).

Discussion

The subject matter of whether animal testing should be banned is very debatable, and it depicts mixed reactions from individuals who oppose or support these experiments. Nevertheless, a vigilant research of this topic shows that claims in favor of animal testing have minimal credibility. This essay finds more about why animal testing should be banned through facts and figures.

The scale of animal testing is beyond all imaginable limits. Some of these studies performed for pharmaceutical purposes, and even mandated by law in many countries. A large part of them is testing of cosmetic products and chemicals on animals which if safe to use would be later used by humans, which is not acceptable. In most cases these tests often duplicated in different centers, increasing the scale of animal suffering. With the current knowledge and existing technologies, there is no excuse for this type of testing on animals. What all humans can do is to choose cosmetic products such as shampoos, creams, washing powders, toothpastes that not tested on animals. In coming years, cosmetic companies will not be able to use the cosmetics ingredients tested on animals. International regulations require them to use alternative methods (Watson, Pp. 25-28).

The man has an ambivalent relationship to the animal. On the one hand, he maintains close relationships with animals, especially domestic animals such as dogs, cats or horses. Dogs help blind people, and often referred to as the best friend of man; cats fill a vacant apartment with living on the backs of the horses well known the happiness of the earth. The man often regarded as his pets and friends of the family.

On the other hand, animals also farmed. 3.56 million Pigs, goats, sheep, cattle and horses, as well as 50 million chickens slaughtered every year in Switzerland. Also, they used for animal experiments in Switzerland, every year approximately 500,000 animals, mostly ...
