CHAPTER I- INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Performance appraisal also referred to as employee appraisal is a system that is used by a given organization to rate the job performance of the organization's employees and this is done in terms of the quantity, time, cost and quality of the performance of a given employee. (Garnett, 1994). Many organizations have adopted different appraisal systems and when some of the organizations have been successful in ensuring that the employees are motivated to record better performance within the organizations, there are other organizations that have adopted very negative appraisal systems that have resulted in the organizations failing to motivate their employees. It is important to note that motivation is the best tool of ensuring that the employees work towards achieving the objectives and targets of the organization. This means that the organization plays a very important part in ensuring that the appraisal system of the organization motivates the employees (Grove, 2000)

The most important thing in an appraisal system is to ensure the employees are motivated to meet their objectives. Leadership is very crucial to the success of any given organization and this can be attributed to the fact that leaders in an organizations are the people responsible of ensuring that the appraisal systems are motivating to the employees. This can be attributed to the fact that the leaders are the people who are responsible of ensuring that the achieving employees are awarded by the appraisal system that is utilized in the organization. However, their responsibility is mainly limited to the achievements of the organization and this means that the organization has to put appraisal systems that are used by the leaders of the organization to motivate the employees.

It is in this respect that the appraisal system can be defined as a regular review of the performance of the employees in a given organization. This means that the organization needs to use the system for various reasons which include for example, giving feedback to the employees in regards to their performance. This is one of the most important thing in an appraisal system because the achieving employees are informed on how to keep to their good work and also improve their performance while the under achieving employees are also advised on how to improve their performance to meet the requirements of the organization (Ramanathan,2002).

Appraisal systems also address the training and recruitment training of the employees to ensure that the organization is successful. This means that the appraisal systems advices the leaders on what training methods and modes that the organization needs to embark on so as to ensure that the employees are well equipped with the skills that are required for the success of the organization ...
