Abstract

This research talks about the approaches that could be helpful in engaging children with their picture books. Picture books play a significant role in children's lives, and provide huge support in children's acquisition of information about the world. Picture books also posses great importance in the intellectual development of children. These are the initial tools to introduce young children with the world and its numerous aspects, as well as, give them a wider window on the world. It takes time to build up a child's readiness for reading, writing, and formally entering in the intellectual world, but picture books makes it easy for children to understand and grasp the deeper ideas without losing their interest. Hence, the aim of this study is to lime light certain approaches that can be used to enhance the level of engagement, as well as, increase the level of interests of children in their picture books.

Literature Review

Picture books

Picture books are not only different from other books in their pictorial realism, but also in numerous other elements. Most commonly, picture books for young children include pull tabs, pop-ups, textures, and many other features especially designed to increase children's physical interaction with the book. The intention behind all these features is to develop interest of the child, and providing fun at the same time. Moreover, these features are mainly used to promote children's engagement with the book. On the other hand, those features designed to enhance children's engagement, may also become a reason for their detraction from learning. So, this paper's focus is on the techniques and approaches to make picture books more attractive for children.

Approaches for promoting engagement in children's picture books

Use of pop-ups and moving pictures

Use of pop-ups and moving pictures is not new to anyone related to this field. However, it is a very useful approach in making children engaged with the pictures books, and increasing their interest in these books. Pop-ups are composed of a single sheet of paper with illustrations on flaps that open to reveal another picture. These forms became increasingly popular after 18th century. Other related form includes juvenile drama sheets in which children create their own miniature theaters with the help of printed sheets of scenery and characters. If we look at the history of pop-ups, then we will get to know that Pop-ups are not born spontaneously in the 20th century. Other forms of books, such as animated moving images, books flaps, tabs, disc, etc had preceded them. The image components, that is to say bunk sheets, process the simplest and oldest, apparently since the late 15th century. During the Renaissance, anatomy, it also uses boards for viewing internal components of the human body. The literature dealing with cosmography, perpetual calendars, sundials are, in turn, often illustrated with plates engraved with movables discs which show rotational different parts of the sky.
