Introduction

Every business in this world exists to extract profit from the market that it operates in. every business has to serve the corporate and business strategy that is aimed towards the materialization of the corporate goal of maximizing the shareholders' wealth. One of the most important things for a business to do is to stay productive no matter what the costs are but it cannot treat its employees as machines and make them work more than they can. In order for a business to stay productive, it is important that the workforce of the company performs more than it is expected to (Manson, 2000, p. 4). The workforce of a company is said to be productive, when its performance exceeds the expectations of the company. The paper will discuss the problems faced by Global Mining Services (GMS) due to the advent of recession, what part the Human Resources (HR) department has to play and legal issues that the organization has to cater, if it opts for downsizing.

If the past literature on the subject is reviewed, there is a varied perception that exists in different school of thoughts. In an article by Gee & Kleiner (1996), the authors talk about the ways in which it will be legal for the organization to opt for a downsizing decision. The authors are of the view that the management of the company should get acquainted will the employment laws so that the issues rising because of the downsizing can be addressed. Lee & Corbett (2006), talk about the impact of downsizing on employees. The authors have identified the impact of the downsizing decision as they believe that the impact is as negative for an organization as anything. They are of the belief that the downsizing in an organization is going to affect the productivity of all the employees. The authors emphasize over the fact that the organization might to consider other options instead of opting for a downsizing decision.

Discussion

One of the most important points to be noted here is the fact that the human resource is the biggest asset of an organization. It is the human capital, whose efforts can make or break the organization. The HR department has to make sure that it hires eligible candidates that have skills that can match the requirements mentioned in the job descriptions. A faulty practice in the hiring process can cost the organization most of its financial resources. If much of the workforce lacks the ability to stay productive, the organization is going to be bankrupted. The HR department has to make sure that the organizational goals are clearly communicated to the employees and there is no conflict between the interests of the employees and that of the organization.
