Computer technology has added a new aspect to all people desiring to broaden their horizons by furthering their education. Over time the traditional procedures of learning have evolved with the advancements in technology. In today's humanity up to date technology makes any thing likely, even earning a degree online. This is especially popular for those considering a career path in graphics design. However does this mean that a traditional fine arts education is no longer needed for those who are in pursuit of a degree in graphic design? Typically online colleges advertise visual arts degrees under the idea that graphics design is nothing more than computer knowledge and creativity. As a result, students graduate lacking the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in the graphics design world. All students looking to earn a degree in graphics design should pursue a traditional art degree.

The last benefit of a traditional arts education is the communication skills you learn and the face-to-face interactions you experience by attending an actual university. Social skills are harder to learn when you do not attend school. There is no curriculum for showing students the significance of communal interaction in the career of an artist or designer. Sure you may think that having a discussion board is important but it doesn't compare to face-to-face interactions. In a traditional learning environment you attend classes that create situations where students can and must collaborate with one another. Through these environments, the students witness that original design is rarely done alone. It's great groundwork for the reality of the working graphic designer.

Visual art work has comprised painting, drawing, computer based art work, photography, video and installation construction. The art works have been produced through residencies, evening classes and artists' own Joe Rivers al time. Activities have included workshops, seminars, open studio events and exhibitions. The art works have been shown in a number of exhibitions.

Two houses and a setting up have been held at Pateley connection and Coldstones Quarry:

September 2005: Tom Fletcher and Beth Ward held a 4 day residency where they combined visual art and creative writing in depicting the sounds and impressions of quarrying activities. This resulted in 9 large works which were later exhibited at number 6 studio gallery in Pateley Bridge and in the University of Leeds.

November 2005: An installation was created at Coldstones Quarry in which quarry materials (dust, aggregate and mud) were used to create a work inspired by the process of fracture in rock. The process and a quarry blast were captured on video and edited into a documentary DVD.

July 2006: David Walker Barker, Vicki Scott, Noelle Odling and John Stell held a 2-4 day residency at Coldstones Quarry and number 6 studio gallery, Pateley Bridge. The art works resulting from this residency formed the basis for the major exhibition in the Centenary Gallery at the University of Leeds.

The YVA project partners have actively supported the Nidderdale Visual Arts group in establishing their space at number 6 studio gallery in Pateley Bridge ...
