Assignment 1

Gorbachev's Glasnost & Perestroika

There is no doubt about the fact that Soviet Union or U. S. S. R was going through a difficult phase of its political life after the World War II. The President Mikhail Gorbachev was heading the Union and has fear of breaking of the country as he is knows as forward thinker (Adas et al., 2008). He devised the theory of Glasnost & Perestroika in order to promote democracy in Communist Party and improve the economic conditions of the country. The term 'Glasnost' is defined as a freedom of speech that allows people to share their ideas in an open environment without having any fear of political persecution. The goal of Glasnost was to ensure participation of more people in politics and make the media free with effective control where freedom of expression is encouraged (Adas et al., 2008). Gorbachev believed that giving freedom to people will not only make the public more close to government but it will also minimize the corruption of government.

While, the term Perestroika is defined as a strategy to rebuild the collapsing political as well as economic system of the country. Gorbachev was seeing that businesses have mono-poly in the country's capital system and breaking this mono-poly is the only way to save the falling economy and the Union (Adas et al., 2008). The goal of Gorbachev, through Perestroika, was to establish a semi-free economic system that will reflect the modern business practices like other countries in west. It is also important to know that Gorbachev wanted to allow more private businesses to enter the market in order to bring price control under government monitoring system. The effects of Gorbachev's these ideologies completely changed the Russian economic system and also opened door for banned media (Adas et al., 2008). There were many banned literature and electronic media that started to speak in public through their programs and publishing. This resulted in a healthy and better political culture for public in the country but remained fail to cope with international challenges to the Soviet Union.

Globalization

In order to complete this assignment, it is essential to know that movement of people, ideas and goods usually initiates the globalization process. No doubt, globalization is an on-gong process that comes with some impacts and also brings different benefits to the societies. It can be seen that globalization has become a common phenomenon where people move from their native places to other new places mostly due to economic opportunities. History reveals that people have been interacting and developing social as well as economical connections for centuries (Adas et al., 2008). It would not be wrong to say that globalization can be seen as a process that creates opportunities for economic development. In today's rapidly changing environment, business and technology are recognized as valuable element of global community and impacts of globalization are obvious on technology, business, culture and migration.
