Asylum Seekers Children Mental Health

Asylum is a sensitive subject and is engaged with asylum seekers to deal with the mental sickness of people. It is thus appreciated for clinicians to be consistently targeted in their work in order to provide better treatment (Gorst, 1991).

The study discloses that asylum seeking young children are at much larger risk of mental sickness, for example traumatic tension symptoms, than their companions. Such young children are those who have been detached away from their families, or escape from their groups, because of persecution, coordinated aggression or war (Bracken, 1996).

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children

Children can go through terrible hardships in lives. Some of the children feel a lot of pain from some terrible events in their life, and then they suffer through PTSD. Luckily, this is not untreatable and can be cured. They should seek help from a health professional or a trusted advisor (Edlls, 1997).

Children may suffer from PTSD after:

- A rape or sexual assault

- A car accident

- The physical or psychological shock

- Natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods

- The sudden death of a parent or loved one (Tim, 2008)

Causes of PTSD

The PTSD can occur after severe shock. It might be an event experienced by the child. But it could be a bad happening that the kid has seen or heard himself. Violent television programs or movies may disturb a child. PTSD symptoms often occur several weeks after the trauma. But it also happens occasionally that such symptoms come to the surface after several years or months (Marks, 1993).

Indications of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children

If a kid suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, he/she could be:

- Making and reviewing frightening dreams in their heads or pictures of some terrible event. And these images are as clear as they are real (Alexander, 2002).

- Being afraid of places or people associated with the situation. A kid might also appear to fall back on it and being insensitive.

- Prick tantrums. A kid may have problems while concentrating or sleeping. He may complain headaches or other health problems (Farrell, 2001).

PTSD In Adults

The cause of the syndrome of post-traumatic stress is not fully understood. In general, mental disorders result from a combination of genetic, other biological and environmental factors. The interrelationship between biology and environment is complex. The brain influences behaviour and experience that has an effect on brain development (Ben, 2007).

Symptoms of PTSD are triggered by a traumatic event. Research indicates that people who have suffered traumatic experiences in the past (e.g., child abuse, serious injury during a disaster or a war) are at risk of developing PTSD. Other research indicates that specific areas of the brain are responsible for the symptoms of PTSD such as fear and anxiety or intrusive thoughts and memories (Tim, 2008).
