Product endorsements have been an integral part of marketing plans since the creation of advertising. Endorsements in sport are thought to date as far back as the ancient Olympic Games. Competitors from Greek city-states were often provided with free housing, meals, and training support in preparation for the games and as compensation for athletic performances. Some professional athletes make more money annually from endorsement deals than from their salaries. In 2006, the top 10 professional athletes who endorse products earned over $220 million all together. Leading the way was Tiger Woods, who earned over $85 million from endorsement deals alone in 2006 and had multi-year endorsement contracts of $105 million and $40 million with Nike and Buick, respectively. Endorsement opportunities may also continue past the end of an athlete's playing career (Carlson, Donavan, 2008).
