Biography of Amerigo Vespucci

Amerigo Vespucci was born on March 9, 1454 in Florence. His father, Nastadzhio Vespucci, was a notary public of the Florentine republic. One of the brothers Amerigo, Antonio, went on to become a scientist at the University of Pisa, and another brother, Geronimo, was a merchant in Syria. Amerigo received his primary education from his uncle, Giorgio Antonio Vespucci, a Dominican monk, who served in the Cathedral of San Marco, under whose guidance Amerigo studied Latin, physics, geography, astronomy and naval brilliantly. In 1470's, Amerigo Vespucci went to the University of Pisa (Armesto, Felipe, et al, p. 36-41). In 1490, Amerigo Vespucci, sent to Seville, where he entered the service of the Medici house sales representative Jeanette (Dzhuanoto) Berardi. Among the most important activities were preparing Berardi sea expeditions and supply. In the early 1490's Vespucci became familiar with the Admiral Christopher Columbus (Armesto, Felipe, et al, p. 36-41). Columbus later wrote a letter to his son, in which he gave a very high score of Signor Vespucci, recommending him as an honest and reliable person.

In 1492, Amerigo Vespucci went on a Spanish naval service and began the study of the device ships and navigation. After the death of Dzhuanoto Berardi Vespucci, Amerigo assumed the duties of his trading house, relating to marine expeditions. In January 1496, he entered into a contract to supply the trade expedition of Spanish Andalusia to India; this journey became to be known as the third expedition of Columbus (Armesto, Felipe, et al, p. 36-41).

In 1499, Amerigo Vespucci participated in the expedition of Alonso Ojeda as a navigator of one of the three ships of the flotilla. To outfit ships of the flotilla, Vespucci spent a lot of his own funds (Armesto, Felipe, et al, p. 36-41). ...
