Bullying and the Mental Effects It Has On the Victims

Introduction

Every day, thousands of teens wake up scared to go to school. Bullying is a problem that affects students of all races and classes, and a concern for many, not only for those who are victims of it, but because parents, teachers and other adults are not always able to witness it, often do not understand how extreme bullying can get (Olweus, 2004, 74). Today, violence in society is very present and the phenomenon of bullying has become a threat to the physical and emotional safety of students. factors that contribute to youth violence reflect trends in society in which they live and the schools reflect this. Discussion

A student is bullied when exposed repeatedly to negative actions from one or more students. A negative action can be defined as situations in which a student or a group of students intentionally inflicts discomfort to another student, whether in a physical, verbal or emotional abuse (hitting, pushing, threatening, abusive, shouting names, making unpleasant gestures or exclude a group). This is not bullying when two students of the same strength (physical or psychological) are fighting and squabbling (Olweus, 2001, 92). This is intimidation only if there is an imbalance in the power relationship between two individuals: the student exposed to negative actions has difficulty defending them helpless in the face and is the student who threat.
