Case 1: Burglary at 119 New Bank Street Morley

Introduction

At 119 New Bank Street, a house belonging to a Doctor, burglars have barged in. The doctor has reported the crime to the Northern Constabulary stating that the burglars might have used the bin outside the house to enter through the kitchen using the kitchen worktop on the inside.

To investigate this crime scene, I have been appointed being a crimes officer. Before any further interpretations of this crime could be done, I need to look into the situation and find all possible evidences from the spot. All the evidences that are found out during the investigation procedures will have to be documented and packaged so as to be submitted in the court of law. My job being a CSI entails surveying the crime scene, securing it, collecting evidences and then preparing a detailed document of all the details regarding the crime that had been committed [1].

Securing the Scene

The evidence left by the burglars is of utmost importance in tracing them. Therefore, it needs to be protected and kept out of reach of unconcerned onlookers. The first step that a crime scene investigator should take is to cover and seal the crime scene using tools like crime tapes and barriers of different kinds. It has to be ensured that the place is not approached by people who do not belong to the investigative team. Crowding near the crime scene should not be allowed at all. Once the detectives and other investigators arrive, they may visit the crime scene and make their own views without compromising.

Managing the Crime Scene

The logistics of the crime scene has to be carefully maintained by the CSI. Being one, I will ensure that correct information passes out to all those who are involved in the investigation team with me. It is also essential that all the technologies being used and information gathered should logically be disseminated as it is responsible in laying out the future course of our case.

Scene Survey

I will be looking at the entire scene superficially first of all and make my theories of what could have had happened at the spot. This will be my early judgments based on my experiences and qualifications. However, these theories will not be final conclusions about the crime and with the passage of time; there may be changes in these theories upon further forensic examination. A wide picture will be taken of the crime scene from the walls and corners. These pictures may really be helpful and provide additional clues to the CSIs [4]. The overview of the crime scene should be followed by specific pictures that may catch hold of anything on the spot that traces the burglar including broken glass pieces, shoe marks on the bin and kitchen worktop, breached cabinet and shelves, tracked-in mud and important objects in the rooms.
