Research Design on Supervisor's Leadership style on employee's productivity

The effect of the management style of the supervisor on the performance of the employee at Curry's PC World

Research Objectives

There would be significant effort directed towards the role of the Supervisor's leadership style as a determinant of Employee's Productivity in the context of Curry's PC World.

Ascertaining the difficulties, if any, faced by the employees pertaining to the Supervisor's leadership style.

Identifying areas which can be significantly improved for increasing productivity of employees for all departments.

Research Philosophy

Interpretivist / Constructivist

Since our topic pertains to a qualitative research, the research philosophy that is most prudent is Interpretivist or Constructivist. Our topic essentially looks at the role of supervisor's leadership style and the employee's productivity. These two elements of our research would be conducted around a survey or a questionnaire approach. Without a questionnaire approach, the results would be inconclusive (Flowers, 2009).

The Interpretivist or Constructivist approach implies that individuals make a majority of their decisions on the basis of their experiences and expectations. If we take a look at the nature of research that would be conducted, there would be a high degree of reliance on the role of primary data. In filling out the questionnaires, employees would be making their decisions based on their personal experiences and expectations. Thus it seems prudent that the applicable philosophy in this case would be Interpretivist or Constructivist. Individuals filling out questionnaires would always base their decisions on their perceptions rather than any other factor. The different perceptions arising out of the individuals on the basis of their varying experiences would have a significant role to play. Thus employees filling the questionnaires would make use of their multiple interpretations and experiences in measuring the role of their supervisor's leadership. Since the research is of a qualitative nature, the Interpretivist or the Constructivist approach would be most feasible (Flowers, 2009).

Research Approach

The Interpretivist often is of the view that information and knowledge is best known by the knower. Since the people of a high know how in this case are the employees that have a firsthand view of their supervisor's leadership style (Dulewicz & Higgs, 2005). They would be aware of all the pertinent information about their supervisor's leadership style. They would be the best people that know about the pros and cons of their leadership style.

Thus the researcher would be inclined to use inductive research approach. Since the researcher would be making use and understanding the interpretations and beliefs of the employees, it is highly likely that the inductive research approach would be used. The views and interpretations expressed by the employees are of a subjective nature and thus cannot be generalized.

Each employee in filling out the questionnaire would be having his own opinions on the basis of the distinct experiences and expectations. Thus the researcher would not be able to generalize their opinions. This research would take the form of qualitative as well as inductive approach because the researcher ...
