What kind of intellectual property is a poem?

By considering this case, it is very clear that an illegal activity has been committed by the author of Poetry Anthology Journal by copying the poem of an individual without taking any permission from the genuine author. He has committed a crime by not even giving credits to the original author that would have been done with the help of citations. It is extremely important for an individual to give credit to the actual owner of the intellectual property as by doing so one can make himself or herself safe from various legal issues (Editorial Board, 2012).

A poem is a literary work that is protected by copyright law. There are mainly four kinds of intellectual property those are; patents, trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights. One thing that the owner of the poem or any other literary work should do is this that he or she should get his or her work copyright protected through legal process otherwise his or her work would be used by people with no issue at all (Smyth, 2011).

Copyright is a kind of intellectual property that helps the genuine authors in protection of their literary work both published and unpublished from theft and other illegal acts. The copyright authorship is given to the originator for a particular period of time under the copyright law. When the specified time period is elapsed these works become available to others and they can reproduce or republish it again. The registration of copyright is done through U.S Copyright office.

The copyright infringement is a legal issue in which an individual copies the intellectual property of an individual without the permission of the original author and uses it for his or her own benefits. Copying others work without giving them credits for their work is an act that refers to copyright infringement and it is considered as a serious criminal act and the one who commits it have to face legal consequences (Prasad, 2012).
