Abstract

This paper focuses on the present political and socio-economic situation in the two most latest EU constituent states, Bulgaria and Romania. Overall, the post-accession time span in both countries has been comparable to that in the East-Central European members that had joined the Union on 1 May 2004. although, there have been some important dissimilarities in the post-accession route of Bulgaria and Romania, which set them apart from the rest of the EU-10, as well as amidst themselves. For example, the difficulty of corruption has been a particularly salient theme for the political elites of both countries and it commanded to the paralysis of the cabinet in Romania during the first year of its members and to the increase of mighty populist options in Bulgaria. What has likely been even more differentiating in the cases of Bulgaria and Romania is their apparent incompetence to swiftly deal with the political and communal challenges emerging after accession, as well as to amply reply to the method of Europeanization. The major cause for this has been the unfinished political and socio-economic transformation of both nations, escorted by the consolidation of certain 'reserve domains', occupied by the previous mystery services and semi-mafia structures.

Namely, the post-accession setting in these two nations strikingly resembles the position in many of the East-Central European nations, which had joined the amalgamation on 1 May 2004, during the first couple of years of their membership. This is mostly exemplified by the considerable waning of the support for the executive and traditional parties that had led those nations in the direction of the much-coveted accession into the EU and NATO and the increase of distinct populist alternatives. furthermore, the high socio-economic anticipations having been constructed up before enlargement did not completely materialize for the most of citizens and enterprise elites, therefore disenchantment with and occasional disputes emerged against the rising charges, the closing of ineffective domestic industries and the decrease of nationwide sovereignty. eventually, the uncertainties created for Bulgarian and Romanian rulers with esteem to the worldwide obligations, originating from EU members and the ...
