Computer-Assisted Language Learning

Abstract

The scientific validity of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) software has been proven to help students in learning a foreign language. This paper discusses the background of computer-assisted language learning, along with its definition. It also discusses some of the different CALL software available like the Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) software. ASR has been proven to help students with their pronunciation and intonation. CALL software is reliable and efficient in terms of giving feedback to the students. Since there is a high rate of immigration in the United States, CALL software can help teach immigrants the English language. This will greatly reduce the problem of lack of trained teachers.

Computer-Assisted Language Learning

Introduction

Background

Many researchers have shown eagerness in the investigation of the claims related to the use of technology and the positive outcomes for students. Foreign language educators, specializing in applied linguistics, SLA and computer-mediated environments, have contributed to a body of work, including theory, processes, products, and research. This has comprised of a sub-area of SLA known as computer-assisted language learning (CALL). In the 1990s, the application of foreign language teaching principles informed early CALL, which incorporated evolving technologies.

CALL is being proven to help foreign language learners in learning the language. Nowadays, teachers are experiencing a renewed focus on foreign language (FL) learning. The need of a more interactive learning system for second language learners has resulted in the development of CALL software. The evidence will show that CALL software works for all language learners. One CALL software that is commonly used is Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). The ASR is available for pronunciation software developed with Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). ASR features for FL are especially useful. The software gives the learner feedback and help with pronunciation, intonation, and speaking practice. The validity of the ASR is tested and measured by qualitative analyses of the student performances.

Foreign language learning and teaching is a difficult task and teachers all over the world have been involved in proposing ideas for its improvement. Technology in the communications industry has been successful in innovation. Due to this innovation, CALL software has been developed to help foreign language learners. The teaching of foreign languages has been derived from science of linguistics, foreign languages, and the methods developed and designed in facilitation of the process for language students. Methods continue to evolve and improve, often as a result of testing methods and findings about student learning process.

Discussion

Technology and CALL

The technology found in the fields of digital and multimedia is relatively new. The addition of CALL software that has been developed to assist foreign language learners. There is ongoing research in terms of enhancing the software and making it more useful for students all over the world. Evidence shows that ASR has been able to assist the FL students with their pronunciation and ...
