Candide: Contemporary French Society and Politics

Introduction

Candide and assists and/or hampers are the most famous characters of Voltaire. These characters express his personal ideas and criticisms of contemporary French society and politics. Candide was written in a period of expansion of the commercial bourgeoisie and the rational exploitation of the earth (movement of the physio-crats). Voltaire echoed this trend in Candide.
