What were the major provisions of the Medicare prescription drug benefit passed by Congress in 2003?

Drug coverage is offered by private plans that offer only drug coverage or Medicare Advantage plans that offer prescription drug coverage and health care. The major provisions of the Medicare prescription drug benefit passed by Congress in 2003 were based on the fact that Delamrva, a foundation, which is registered under the agreement of the Medicare and the Medicaid Centers for service, will be given the authority and the responsibility to look after and tackle any kind of unethical practices. Health Integrity, which is a subsidiary company of the Delmarva foundation will be responsible to carry out this task. This will, in turn, reduce the chances of such incidents of potential fraud, waste or abuse and would be beneficial for all (Angell, 2004).

Health Integrity is interested in receiving reports of potential fraud, waste or abuse of the public. Following are a few types of examples of these types of complaints, which when solved will be beneficial for the overall sector:

A beneficiary with a gift worth over $ 15 to open an Insurance Plan Medicare prescription drug.

A pharmacy does not give a beneficiary of all drugs prescribed to him on his prescription.

A beneficiary has been charged for drugs that he or she has not received.

A beneficiary was charged more than once for the monthly premium cost.

A system of Medicare prescription drug benefit did not pay for covered drugs (Angell, 2004).

What mechanisms of political influence did the drug industry use in seeking passage of this legislation?

The drug industry had lots of political influence in seeking passage of this legislation. As is known that there are lots of the pharmaceuticals always have their own interests, which they usually get fulfilled by people that have the authority in this regard. This industry is known to offer different kinds of benefits to such individuals with authority, in order to get the desired results. This is an unethical, but usual practice in this industry. Through this practice, the drug industry was able to seek passage of this legislation (Angell, 2004).
