Introduction

Cellphones have been the most active tool when it comes to the age of communication,. Not only have they been at the forefront of technological advancement, but every new model is given its very own hype and sensationalized in a grand manner. It is a product that sells because of its usefulness and ease of access from anywhere in the world. Mobile network services have made the connection between people through wireless networks that much easier, with texting and video conferencing technology available at a low cost from all major services. Apart from this, the global positioning system is installed in mostly all new cell phones which means it is easier to keep track of oneself or their phone, if it gets lost. Emergency networks are available throughout the day 7 days a week, as well as other help lines available to those who need help in other matters. Banking is also a concept that has been revolutionized through mobile technology, saving a lot of time and effort for customers through texting. Regular updates from different websites can also be subscribed to, as well as email connectivity from anywhere around the world. In this paper, I will discern the history of texting as it expanded over the mobile phone using community earlier on (Agar, 2004).

Discussion

People who are now in their mid-20's will remember clearly how the text messaging services took over in the last 1990's to 2000's, so much so that it took the entire world by storm. There are several protocols available for text messaging today but it all originated from the GSM network in early 1980's. The Global System for Mobile Communication originated from Europe and rose on to become a standard for global technology companies looking to expand on devices with the same technology. The idea for text messaging was born out of discussions for features that could go on in addition with the standard network. The basic idea for text messaging arose with a different end result in mind. The creators wanted to create a text alert to mobile phone customers for every time they received a voicemail. The IDEG, Implementation of Data and Telematics Services Experts Group became in charge of this operation in 1987 and went on to create standards for small messaging services for future use. The first text message that was ever sent across was by Neil Papworth of Airwide Solutions, in 1992 (Agar, 2004).

However, GSM phones faced a slow growth in the beginning, with the sms feature being unused for several years in its infancy.
