Children's Poverty Policy

Introduction

The UK has recently experienced a considerable decline in child poverty that has been mainly attributed to government reforms. However, other studies suggest that children from the very poorest families remain a legitimate concern. Sutherland (2001) noted that the income situation of the poorest children may have indeed worsened following the government's reforms. Recent evidence from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) revealed that whereas the proportion of children in non-severe poverty declined significantly after 1997, there has been no evidence of a corresponding decline in the proportion of children in severe poverty (Bäckman, 2009, p251).

This was consistent with findings from a study based on the Family Resources Survey (FRS) which observed that the decline in child poverty between 1997/98 and 2003/4 was lower for more severe poverty (below 50 per cent of median income) compared to the proportion below 60 per cent of median income. While the government is committed to continuing to monitor various aspects of poverty, including persistent poverty, there are no plans to monitor severe poverty (Bäckman, 2009, p251).

Poverty has been around for a long time now but hardly anybody has done anything to stop it all around the world. Child poverty is an indicator of the hard times the world is going thru. Families all over the world have the responsibility to guide their children to the right path by providing them with everything they need in order to succeed, but with poverty in their footsteps it's making it basically impossible for many families in general to do so. Challenged with so many things like economic insecurity and unemployment parents have had to beg for money in the streets so that they could try and support their kids. The Children of this great world are the future but with the consequences that poverty causes every year it is devaluating their human existence. Separating them from their families, influence people to commit crimes & violence, and condemning the kids to a bad environment all play a part in the daily lives of the children living in poverty.

Economic

Poverty also is a factor in people committing crimes and violence. Research shows that unemployed people that come from a poor family do more crimes that people from a higher class. Poverty can lead to high levels of stress that in turn may lead individuals to commit theft, robbery, and violent acts. Moreover, poverty usually leads to a lower to hardly any education, which would cause youth to count on less access to quality schools, jobs, and role models, decreasing the opportunity costs of crime and increasing the probability of youth spending time on the streets associating with gangs committing crimes.
