Teaching Circuit Analysis Effectively to Electrical Engineering Students

Introduction

Teachers generally use the project based approach to teach the circuit analysis course, no matter the students are studying it as their majors or non-majors. Introductory courses highlight techniques of analysis at the cost of instilling an intuitive understanding of the problem and the underlying engineering principles. Now it is projected that an introductory course of circuit analysis must teach the inter-relationships of current, voltage, power, resistance, capacitance and inductance both intuitively and mathematically, because much of practical design of circuit is not linear and cannot be reduced to problems of linear circuit analysis.

In contrast to the analysis of electrical circuits excited with signals constant (direct current), this course considers their behavior steady state when excitation signals are present variations in the time. They extend the laws and theorems of direct current circuits explain the new operating conditions to this type of signals. In addition, presents an introduction to polyphase systems and circuits coupled magnetically serve as a platform for other subjects and enable the engineer to analyze more deeply the electrical devices make up an electrical system. On the other hand, the use of specialized software represents an important tool for understanding and assimilation of new concepts in the above analysis, which also serve as a first approach to modeling physical systems and implementation of algorithms solution for their response to different excitation signals.

Description and Analysis

The profession of engineering needs engineers to deal with uncertainty and work out on difficult problems of the field, sometimes with incomplete data. Furthermore, engineers require to be capable of functioning as efficient members of teams and have good problem solving and communication skills. Othe other hand, graduates of engineering today lack these skills and have complexity in implying their basic knowledge to problems of practice. This course provides the basis for the study and / or system design power because it develops the capacity for analysis and interpretation of their behavior when excited with time-varying signals. With the introduction of basic concepts such ...
