Introduction

Throughout the annals of school room learning, numerous distinct types of disciplinary schemes have been directed by teachers and other authority numbers in schools for the sole reason of controlling student behaviour. These schemes include corporal penalty, psychological misuse or neglect, and assertive discipline. Although two of these three topics are illicit at this time, they were all widely utilised in schools over the country a short time ago. Corporal penalty in general can be characterised as the infliction of agony or confinement as a punishment for an offense pledged by a student.

During the time that corporal penalty was utilised by schools all over the United States and Canada, parents did not have any state in school discipline. It was completely up to the school administration numbers on the kind of punishment and the severity of the punishment granted to the student. The classroom educator had the most say in the matter since it was the teacher who generally administered the punishment to the students. Because of this, some educators (who particularly liked the idea of personal penalty) took benefit of the secondary guidelines set by the principal to defend scholars from unwarranted personal beatings. These guidelines diverse from school to school, but often included extent, breadth and thickness of the paddle or any other tool for fighting used, the allowance of times the scholar may be hit by the weapon, and other secondary minutia about other types of personal punishment.

The list of tools for fighting that were acceptable for educators to use include long: rubber hoses, leather straps and bands, sticks, rods, directly pins, hard artificial baseball bats, and arrows. If at the time a teacher did not have his/her tool for fighting, they would often holiday resort to hitting, booting, slapping and agitating as ways to 'get children's attention'.
