Co-evolution

Introduction

The eco system of the world depends upon insects for pollination, soil aeration, energy cycling, decomposition and nutrient cycle. Bees play a major role in the pollination process and they reflect a huge impact on the world ecology and eco system. The endangerment of insect species particularly the bees is a growing issue of concern for the eco system. Bees help in pollination of most flowering plants, fodder crops, vegetables and fruits. The extinction of the species of bees and the co evolution of pollinating animal and insect species would have a severe impact on the economy, environment and eco system of the world. They are responsible for the food security and ensuring the protection of fruits and flowers. The concept of endangerment of such pollinating insects and bees would affect the agriculture of a country. According to an estimate, the approximate value of pollination through insects in the agricultural field of Europe is measured to be 22 billion Euros per year (Gallai et al., 2009). This paper discusses the co-evolution of pollinating insects' species, co-evolution of flowering plants, their negative impact on the economy, eco system, agriculture and environmental conditions. It also discusses the concept of GMOs that are genetically modified organisms. The increasing trend of artificial pollinators and their impact on the species of insects and plants is discussed in the paper.

Issue

Pollination is a core function that helps in the development and growth of the eco system. The functioning of pollination is threatened all over the world with the introduction of artificial means of pollination that affects the ecosystem functioning of the world. It also leads to endangerment of species because their work is done by genetically modified organisms. The number of the colonies of honey bees are decreasing with a fast pace which will lead to the distraction of eco system. The agriculture sector has a wide impact on the ecosystem and overall environmental system of the world. The new insects are introduced called as introduced insects who have taken place of the traditional bee workers responsible for pollination. The native bees have taken the place of honey bees and the life span of honey bees is declining with a drastic rate. It also leads to the extinction of bees in several areas of the world. There are several indictors in the ecosystem that shows the decreased level of honey bees, moths, wild bees and butterflies who were considered as the key players and pollinators helping in the process of pollination (Potts et al., 2010). Some researchers and scientist have found that the presence of diseases and poisonous material in some insects is a cause of the phenomenon of co evolution of plants and it is responsible for the endangerment of the species. The insects containing toxic material with them will harm the flowering plants which bear fruits ad vegetables. The human being eats those vegetables and fruits which may be toxic in nature. This will affect the health of human being which is a serious concern for ...
