CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Outline of the study

The following study is based on the topic “Collective Leadership at the District Level”. The first chapter will illustrate and provide details on the introduction to the topic and will also examine the aims and objectives of the study. The second chapter will also provide a detailed review of the literature and previous studies. The literature review will also explain the previous studies which were conducted on the specific field. The third chapter will demonstrate the methodology of the proposed study. The fourth chapter of thesis will examine and illustrate the findings and discussion of the research study. The fifth chapter will provide the conclusions and will also highlight future implications for the future research.

Background of the study

The term leadership is described as the process in which a group of individuals influence other people socially and support them in order to accomplish a common organizational task. Leadership is also defined as organizing a group of people in the achievement of a common goal. The leader may or may not have any kind of formal authority. The concept of collective leadership is an emerging field and it doesn't have any common definition. Collective leadership is a process of embracing human, cultural and technological resources which may enable the local citizens to work together to improve and enhance the environment of their communities for the wellbeing of the society (Barker, 1989)

Over the years, many studies have been conducted which have defined and examined the role of superintendent in the education sector at the district level. The studies have revealed that in the initial years the duty of superintendent was controlled by the school committees. Even at that time, many theorists argued for having leadership in a centralized way. Studies have proved that effective superintendents know various strategies which improve the teaching and learning process (Carella, 2000). The superintendent helps in articulating the vision for education for the children and incorporating the vision into the district. The studies have also stated that superintendent face many challenges while delivering education. The studies have further stated that the government at the district level must try to minimize the challenges in order to provide high quality education (Beckner, 1986)

Research aims and objectives

Before conducting research on the proposed study, it is essential for the researcher to decide and analyze the aims and objectives for the research study. The primary aims and objectives of any research study help the researcher to systematically conduct the study. The aims and objectives of the proposed study are a guide for the researcher through which the researcher can deduce all the research questions. The aims and objectives of the research study are given below:
