Concept of communication in Nursing

The lack of alignment between a patient's verbal and nonverbal communication can challenge nurses' abilities to comprehend effectively Researchers have recognized the ever present intergenerational dynamic of older patients receiving health care from younger professionals, specifically the relationship between lifespan stage, conflict styles, depth of conflict and conflict satisfaction.

The concept of communication in nursing involves three basic stages for adopting effective communication.

1)Charting

2)Nursing Care Plan

3)Direct Reporting

An effective communication can be taken place in the environment of nursing requires the effectiveness in above three areas.

Nurses are required to maintain up-to-date and accurate records of assessments, risks and problems, care, arrangements for ongoing care and any information provided. The primary purpose of these records is to support patient care and improve communication. Audits of record-keeping should consider whether the content of the records is supporting safe, effective care and communication. Record-keeping by nurses is supposed to be an integral part of practice, not 'an optional extra to be fitted in if circumstances allow'(Argenti, 1998).

Effective nurse communication is essential to quality care of the patient-family unit. The American Association of Critical Care Nurses' Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments (2005) stated in standard one (i.e., skilled communication), “Nurses must be as proficient in communication skills as they are in clinical skills”. Observing and recording actual nurse-patient communication for the purpose of evaluation is time consuming and tedious. Traditional concept of communication skills does not allow for practical application.

Practicing communication skills through simulation in a clinical learning laboratory allows nurses to practice and test skills in a safe, nonthreatening environment and allows faculty to evaluate and provide feedback to the patients.

Several nursing studies have investigated the simulation use for learning communication skills. However, these studies varied in their approach and evaluation of communication, and thus direct comparison with this study would be difficult. Yedidia studied the effects of communication training on medical student performance using student interaction with a standardized patient, individual feedback, and student self-reflection. This practice of communication provides an overview for better communication with the patients as well as with nurses.

The literature indicated good communication is important in nursing. A European study found communication quality was significantly effective in hospitals with good attraction and retention rates for nurses. In the United States, enhanced communication mechanisms comprise one of strategies for more effectively dealing with a managed care environment.

The nurse, therefore, consciously considers the best ways to support the relative and chooses appropriate interventions. However, the unconsciously competent practitioner is able to select from a number of observations based on a broad range of experience, about the needs of the relative in this situation. The decision on how to intervene to support the relative is made very quickly: the decision-making process is fast and not necessarily the result of overt, conscious deliberation.
