Communicative Language Teaching

General Definition

The communicative approach is term language training for a view of learning based on the meaning and context of the statement in a communication situation. This approach runs counter to the earlier views by focusing more on form and structure of language and context. It is important to consider the opposition in the linguistic theories to better understand the concept of common approaches.

Constructivism VS. Structuralist

The evolution of linguistic theories can be analyzed without taking into account the various "conflicts" between the successive movements of research in this area. Thus, the origin of the communicative approach can be placed in this larger context of scientific debates.

The principles of the communicative approach back to the work of Noam Chomsky, who revolutionized the world of linguistics. At the time of structuralist theories were booming, postulating that every language is a system of complex structures nested inside each one (work by Saussure and SKINNER) other, Chomsky comes and contradicts the traditional approaches to introduce the concept of acquisition device language "(literally translated as" language acquisition device "). According to Chomsky, every human being has an innate ability to decipher and understand a language code with a specific intellectual function. This theory is based on the observation of Children who master their native language in less than four years without formal education. Therefore, for Chomsky, there are several different systems, but not a single "universal grammar."

These concepts are derived from the principles of constructivist theory and cognitive approaches to language learning. Thus emerged the concept of inter-language, based on observation of the child's language development from birth to his mastery of language. The child constructs his own language, from an extension phase of the syntactic rules and gradually leads to a Master to adjust the floor. Thus, these new observations suggest it is the same for all students in a foreign language, to promote learning, little by little must build its own internal language and communication evolves naturally.

Threshold Level

The development of linguistic theories mentioned above has to create favorable conditions for the emergence of the communicative approach. But it was in 2005 that his features are drawn in reality when the Council of Europe defines "threshold level (threshold level) of English as a model for all other languages. Inspired by military concerns of the United States after the war seeking to communicate effectively in countries where it landed, the threshold level of the Council of Europe an inventory of the language skills to quickly reach operating in the country abroad. For the first time, the tongue is cut, either in grammatical structures, but a list of notions and functions defined as minimum requirements.

The functions are a list of language skills may be operative in situations of foreign media "stand", "ask for directions, buying a train ticket." In a more abstract level, these functions are part of a series of concepts such as "time", "space", "feelings", "social relations", ...
