ABSTRACT

The research paper will explore the development of IPv6 over the past decade, along with discussing the successes of IPv6 so far; such as the much needed updates to IPsec (Internet Protocol Security), and the updates to common routing protocols such as EIGRP, ISIS, BGP, OSPF and RIP used in the current IPv4 setting.

Comparison of Dynamic Routing Protocols, EIGRP and ISIS for IP networks in IPv6 Environment

Overview

Internet today is huge and an indispensable part of our lives. The uses of Internet are vast and virtually unlimited. The networks today have the ability to carry traffic like voice, video and data on a single network. Such a network is called a converged IP network. Internet Protocol or IP is the primary mode of communication in an IP network.

There are two types of routing protocols: static routing protocols and dynamic routing protocols. Large Networks consists of different Autonomous Systems (AS) Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP) is used to exchange information between different AS and Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) is used to exchange information within the AS.

Discussion and Analysis

IPv4 Transition to IPv6

In the United States, the businesses are the moving force for technology and creation of standardization. In many cases, businesses are looking for ways to give themselves the competitive edge. Usually, that means utilizing the latest technologies to their full advantage. In order for a business to communicate through the internet it must use standards followed by other companies, otherwise there will be compatibility issues. Through standardization, a typical office employee could login in at home to check email, and then access the company network using various standard protocols, which can be redistribute or translate into other standard protocols to cross any network and establish a VPN tunnel for businesses to conduct business as usual.

EGP and IGP are both Dynamic routing protocols. IGP is further divided into two types: link-state routing protocols and distance-vector routing protocols [4]. EIGRP is an advanced distance-vector routing protocol (Hybrid) and IS-IS is a link-state routing protocol
