Comparison of Punishment with the Rehabilitation

Abstract

This paper relates to the understanding of the comparison between the effectiveness of punishment with the effectiveness of the rehabilitation of convicted offenders in prison and under community supervision. The idea of the paper is to discuss the effectiveness of punishment and rehabilitation under the scenario of its effect on the victims, offenders, social society and fiscal society. The main part of the discussion involves the comparison of punishment with the rehabilitation.

Introduction

This paper discusses the comparison of the effectiveness of punishment and rehabilitation of convicted offenders under prison and under community supervision. It includes the impact of these systems and its effects on offenders, victims, social society and fiscal; society. Punishment is often used as a primary approach to correctional systems, where as rehabilitation is often used by other correctional systems. Both rehabilitation and punishment are often used together but there is no such system which focuses on incarceration as a short period of punishment followed by a lengthy period of community based rehabilitation. The two acknowledged objectives of the criminal justice are punishment and rehabilitation as deterrence to crime. Individuals committing crime are punished without any interruption immediately in United States. Many theories have concluded with the comparison of the effectiveness of punishment with the rehabilitation to see the effects on offenders, victims, social society and fiscal society. The most common form of punishment is incapacitation. The most primary goal in the criminal justice system is deterrence which is categorized as the special, specific and general deterrence. Rehabilitation is mostly common in deterring crime. The process of rehabilitation has proven to be more effective to restrict individuals from committing a crime repeatedly. The punishment to a criminal or offender has been swift to rehabilitation in the majority of societies. Punishment led many effects on the offenders through incarceration. It affects most offenders psychologically. This paper will conclude the comparison of effectiveness of punishment with the rehabilitation of under prison offenders.

Discussion

The individual who commits crime in our society is punished or rehabilitated as per criminal justice system. The two acknowledged objectives of the criminal justice are punishment and rehabilitation as deterrence to crime.
